Glacier Bay National Park (Alaska)

Glacier Bay National Park is just a 20-minute flight from Alaska's capital, Juneau. Its airport is in the town of Gustavus, which serves as the gateway to the park. The usual period when tourists visit the park is between May and September. I spent several days in its campground, called Bartlett Cove campground, which is quite large and surprisingly empty. Obviously, due to the presence of bears, you need to follow standard rules that require food and scented items in proper food caches. There are a few maintained trails in the area, including the Bartlett River Trail and the Bartlett Lake Trail, which branches off from the river trail to reach the lake. A daily boat tour departs from Bartlett Cove and reaches the glaciers, passing through an incredible expanse of pristine wilderness that is home to numerous species of birds, otters, sea lions, bears, and whales. Lucky visitors may even spot orcas along the way. The daily tour can also be used to drop visitors in a remote area of the park for backcountry hiking or kayaking, which is probably the best way to visit this wild national park.
Culinary tip: Inside the park there is only one restaurant, at the lodge, which offers different choises, including excellent Alaskan fish such as halibut and salmon, and burgers with spectacular fries.
