Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches across the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, and includes a
section of the famed Appalachian Trail. As the most visited national park in the United States, it can get crowded,
so a bit of patience may be required during peak times. Visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of forest-clad
mountains, scenic waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, ranging from black bears and coyotes to elk and even colorful
salamanders. For a different perspective on the landscape, several stables within the park offer guided horseback
riding excursions.
Culinary tip: While you’ll find plenty of dining options just outside the park, food choices within
its boundaries are extremely limited. One welcome exception is the small shop at the entrance to Cades Cove, a
convenient stop for snacks and refreshments (including ice-cream) before or after your visit.
