Located in the southwest part of Alaska, Katmai National Park can be reached only by boat or seaplane. It is mostly known for its brown bears catching the salmon
at the Brooks river. If you hate spending time in queues, which are particularly heavy in July, my experience at the end of June
may suggest a different time for visiting Brooks falls. No waiting list, few people on the platforms when I also found
myself alone and able to take a short nap. However, Katmai National Park is much more than Brooks river. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes offers an incredible
view of the effects of the 1912 Novarupta eruption. Hallo Bay, in the eastern part of the park, is also famous for the
sight of the brown bears during the whole summer. In addition, Katmai encompasses a vast and remote area that holds significant value for archaeological research.
Culinary tip: Try the salmon at Brooks Lodge restaurant and their delicious desserts: after a day
on the platforms, a little indulgence is allowed!
